White supremacy is a death cult.

As we are in the midst of a coup 🤷🏿‍♀️ Let’s talk about why Republican US Congress members advocating for an 1877-esque Election Commission to decide the 2020 election is disturbing.

The 1876 Samuel Tilden (Democrat)/Rutherford B. Haynes (Republican) election literally streamline Black disenfranchisement and white supremacist terrorism.

*Please remember the two party system was the same BS we are dealing with now, but switch Democrats and Republicans … it’s a long story, but in general Democrats were proslavery and pro-Black disenfranchisement (openly) during this Civil War/Reconstruction period.

The 1876 election stands as the backdrop of widescale and systemic oppression, repression, and suppression of Black people in the United States.

The 1877 Election Commission initiated the Great Compromise of 1877, which certified Rutherford B. Haynes as US President and ended the Reconstruction Era (post Civil War transition period, 1863 to 1877). This was a unifying moment for the United States — a moment of reconciliation with the purpose of buttressing and catapulting white supremacy as a renewed national policy.

This takes place during the period of Liberal Reconstruction 1872–1877 as anti-Black, anti-Asian, and anti-indigenous rhetoric and politics took hold to a new level within the US. Prior to Liberal Reconstruction is Presidential [1863–1865] and Radical [1865/1866–1872] Reconstruction periods.

11 years before the 1876 election, chattel slavery became “illegal” (except for as punishment for “crime”) with the 13th Amendment, 1865.

11 years before the 1876 election, the Ku Klux Klan is established as a terrorist organization and military arm of the Democratic party.

6 years before the 1876 election, Black men attained the right to vote with the 15th Amendment, 1870.

4 years before the 1876 election, the Enforcement Acts of 1870/1871 made the Klan and white supremacist terrorism illegal.

The same year of the 1876 election, the Supreme Court decided United States v. Cruikshank, 92 U.S. 542 (1876), which nullified the Enforcement Acts and sanctioned nationwide terrorism against Black people, as well as systemically nullified citizenship rights and protections instituted by the 14th Amendment, 1868.

The 1876 election and compromise decision made by the 1877 Election Commission ended the Reconstruction Era. This end ushered in 90 years of Jim Crow (south and north)/Jane Crow white supremacist policies, practices, and institution building — whether segregationist, xenophobic, or imperialist.

After the 1877, we have the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the Massacre of Indigenous peoples at Wounded Knee in 1890, and Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under “separate but equal”. (Note: *renewed efforts of military occupation, aggression, and war against Indigenous peoples under ideologies of Manifest Destiny and imperialism occurred west of Mississippi since Indian Removal Act of 1830 — internet search “Indian Wars”)

This is what is wrong with citing the 1877 Election Commission as a tactic to overturn the 2020 US election.
